Purple Fire is Clas Yngströms pure Jimi Hendrix-group. The repertoire reflects Jimi´s music through he’s short but explosive carriere. It’s not a matter of copying Hendrix music in detail, this is more about daring interpretation in the masters and the late 60s free musical spirit.
On drums – Uffe Åhman, legendary rock profile from Sme´backen in the heart of Dalarna, who in the fall of -78 started the Sky High group with Clas. Multi-instrument player Klas Hägglund, Grammy winner with the Borlänge band Stonecake, on base.
In November 2002 Clas gathered a group of guitarists (Janne Schaffer, Kenny Håkansson, Thomas Larsson and others.) to tribute Jimi Hendrix on the 60th day from he’s birth. This all took place at Jazz club Fasching in Stockholm and was a big success. As a joint comp. band Clas created Purple Fire.
Thanks to the enormous turnout, (the premises only hold maximum 400 people – but over 1100 people came – Purple Fire preformed for another two magical nights at Fasching some months later, to tribute Jimi. These performances were recorded and became a live album, ”Jimi Hendrix Tribute – Live in Stockholm”, since fall 2003 the record is on the American record company Grooveyard Records.
Purple Fire contains of three incurable Hendrix nerds, who together – in spite of the 20 years age difference – is playing Jimi´s music with the same loving, and natural authority. Uffe and Clas have been playing music by Jimi Hendrix since 1968, back then Clas was only 14 years old! The same age as ”Häggbert” the first time he played with Sky High!!!
